Sound of Music Tour or Self-Guided?

Salzburg's Sound of Music sites fall into two groups: city locations you can reach on foot or by city bus, mostly free, and a wedding church out in the lake district. Which group you care about decides whether a tour is worth its four hours.

The short answer

Go self-guided if the city locations are enough: the Mirabell Gardens, the Horse Pond, Nonnberg Abbey and the Hellbrunn gazebo are free to see and on foot or one bus ride away, and no tour takes you inside Leopoldskron Palace. Book the four-hour coach tour if you also want the Mondsee wedding church and the lake scenery without planning transport. The bike tour, from April to October, is the guided option without a coach.

Most of the film locations are free and walkable

Salzburg Tourism lists six filming locations in and around the city: the Felsenreitschule, Hellbrunn Palace, Nonnberg Abbey, the Horse Pond on Karajan Square, the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, and Leopoldskron Palace. Four of them can be seen without a ticket. The Mirabell Gardens, where Maria and the children dance around the Pegasus Fountain in “Do-Re-Mi”, are free and open daily from about 6 a.m. until dusk, with partial closures in winter. The Horse Pond is a public square at the foot of the Mönchsberg. Nonnberg Abbey's church, where the story begins, is open daily from early morning except during services. The gazebo from “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” stands in the Hellbrunn palace park, which is open daily and separate from the ticketed palace and trick fountains. Bus 25 reaches the Schloss Hellbrunn stop in about 25 minutes from the city centre.

Two locations that no tour can open for you

Leopoldskron Palace, whose lakeside terrace stood in for the von Trapp home, is now a hotel and event venue. Salzburg Tourism states that the palace and its park are not open to the public, so the coach tour shows it from across the pond. The Felsenreitschule, where the family sings at the festival, is a working festival stage. You see its arcades at a performance or on the Salzburg Festival's own guided tours, which are currently limited by building work. A Sound of Music ticket changes neither.

What the coach tour adds is Mondsee

The Original Sound of Music Tour leaves Mirabellplatz daily at 9:15 and 14:00 and takes about four hours. Its operator lists the Mirabell Gardens and Pegasus Fountain, Leopoldskron seen from across the lake, the Hellbrunn gazebo and the church in Mondsee where the wedding was filmed, with a drive through the lake district and the soundtrack on board. You can reach the city stops on your own. What you are really paying for is Mondsee and the lake scenery in one half-day, without reading a timetable. On a two-day Salzburg trip, four hours on a coach is a large share of your city time. On a third day, or if you would rather not plan lake transport, it is the easy answer.

The bike tour is the middle path, in season

Fräulein Maria's Bicycle Tours run from early April to the end of October, daily at 9:30 from Mirabellplatz, for about three and a half hours. The route goes through the Mirabell Gardens, past the Horse Pond, St Peter's Cemetery and Nonnberg Abbey, out to Leopoldskron and Frohnburg, and back along the Hellbrunner Allee. You keep a guide and the stories without the coach, but you stay in the city: there is no Mondsee, and the weather has a say.

New since September 2026: a museum beside the gazebo

On 20 September 2026 the Salzburg Museum opened a seasonal museum, “Sound of Music Salzburg”, in the historic buildings at the entrance to the Hellbrunn park. It covers both the film and the real von Trapp family, and the museum describes the gazebo next door as the only film set from the movie that remains in Salzburg. The 2026 season ends on 1 November, and the museum reopens on 20 March 2027. Salzburg Tourism lists one free entry with the Salzburg Card. On a self-guided day, it turns Hellbrunn into the most substantial stop.

Straight answers

The questions people actually ask.

Use the short answers below to settle the practical details before you book.

Is the Sound of Music tour worth it?

It is worth it if you want the Mondsee wedding church and the lake scenery without planning transport, and can give it about four hours. It is not worth it if the city locations are what you came for. The Mirabell Gardens, the Horse Pond, Nonnberg Abbey and the Hellbrunn gazebo are free to see and reachable on foot or by bus 25, and no tour takes you inside Leopoldskron Palace.

Can you see the Sound of Music locations without a tour?

Yes, most of them. Walk to the Mirabell Gardens and the Pegasus Fountain, the Horse Pond on Karajan Square and Nonnberg Abbey in the old town. Then take bus 25 to Schloss Hellbrunn for the gazebo and, until 1 November 2026 or from 20 March 2027, the new Sound of Music Salzburg museum. Leopoldskron is closed to the public, and Mondsee needs its own transport.

Where is the Sound of Music gazebo?

In the park of Hellbrunn Palace, south of the city centre. It stood at Leopoldskron during filming and was later moved to Hellbrunn so that visitors could reach it. Bus 25 runs to the Schloss Hellbrunn stop in about 25 minutes from the city centre. The Salzburg Museum describes it as the only film set from the movie that remains in Salzburg.

Avoid

Common mistakes that weaken the trip.

Rail and Postbus timetables, opening hours, cable-car and boat operation, and festival dates can change. Check the current detail with the linked operator.

Spending half of a two-day Salzburg trip on a coach, mainly to see city locations you could walk to.

Expecting a tour to take you inside Leopoldskron Palace or its park. Both are closed to the public; tours show the palace from across the pond.

Taking the film as the family's history. Even the tour operator notes that the real departure from Austria was far less dramatic than the film's version.

Building a self-guided Hellbrunn visit around the museum between 2 November 2026 and 19 March 2027, when it is closed for the season.
